Common Misconceptions About Witches

The witch portrayed in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ has not helped the witch's image!

Let’s get rid of those ridiculous ideas some people still hold about witches.

Misconceptions about witches usually come from ignorance and fear which has been built up over centuries by religion and popular culture.

For the record:

  • Witches do not eat babies - this idea comes from old folklore and fairies were often blamed for doing the same thing.
  • Witches are not Satanists who sell their souls to the devil in return for special powers. Lots of witches don’t even believe in the devil - he is a Christian conception.
  • Witches don’t fly or ride brooms - they get around in cars like everyone else.
  • Witches don’t inherit magical powers, although if your family has a tradition of it, you might have a head start.
  • Not all witches possess psychic powers but some do choose to develop this and their intuition. The truth is everyone has psychic ability, including you.
  • Not all witches worship ancient gods and goddesses but some do.
  • Witches are not immortal, they have ordinary lifespans just like everybody else.
  • Witches are not ugly old hags, they can be young and incredibly beautiful but most are just average people like you and me.
  • Witches can be male or female.
  • Witches don’t consult or battle with demons, vampires, zombies, or monsters - they have better things to do!
  • Witches prefer pizza over eye of newt any day!
